Argus launches south China coal forward curve

Global energy price reporting agency Argus has introduced a daily forward curve for cfr south China coal swaps basis 5,500 kcal. The curve, launched on 5 September, is published in Argus Coal Daily International and is derived from input from a broad range of market participants.
The forward curve will consist of the front month, the first four quarters, and three calendar years.
Argus has been publishing a physical cfr south China coal price since March this year. Initially the assessment was weekly, but it became daily at the start of August.
These new assessments will support the development of new trading and hedging instruments for the Chinese market. China is the fastest growing coal import market in the world, with around 160mn t of imports in 2010.Argus Media chairman and chief executive Adrian Binks said: “We have worked closely with the companies involved to create this forward curve, which will be of use to anyone involved with coal imports in China. Formal clearing arrangements will be provided soon by a major market participant”.
