Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor will build two new galvanizing lines split between South Carolina and the western US.
One of the lines will be at Nucor's Berkeley flat-rolled steel mill in South Carolina and will have a capacity of 500,000 short tons (st)/yr and be able to produce galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide.
The $425mn investment will target the automotive and durable consumer good markets and will open in mid-2025.
In August, Nucor announced a $200mn modernization to the Berkeley mill that includes the construction of a new air separation unit.
The other galvanizing line will be built in the western US. Nucor did not release further details about the project.
In December, the steelmaker purchased a majority stake in California Steel Industries, a 3.1mn st/yr rolling mill in the southern part of California.
