Argus FSU Fertilizer 2017

Russian version

Argus held its FSU Fertilizer 2017: Production, trading and logistics international conference on 6-8 September 2017 in Minsk, Belarus.

The event brought together more than 200 industry representatives from 18 countries, including Russia, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Finland and others. They included leading producers, trading firms, representatives of transport and logistics companies, feedstock suppliers and engineers. Participants discussed the latest trends in the fertilizer market, including producers’ export potential, expected additions to fertilizer production capacity and other important industry issues.

Belarusian Potash Company, one of the largest global producers and exporters of potassium chloride, once again assumed the role of general partner of the conference. The event was also supported by the Gomel Chemical Plant and fertilizer producer Slavkaliy.

The first day of the conference saw delegates enjoy a tour of the mining and processing plant that local producer Belaruskali is building in Petrikov. Delegates learned about the development of the Petrikov potassium salt mine and were able to evaluate Belaruskali’s largest investment project.

Industry discussions started the next day, focusing on the European fertilizer market. The agenda included a performance analysis of Belarusian producers and market trends in Russia, Ukraine, central Asia and the Baltic states.

The head of Argus Media’s Russian operations, Vyacheslav Mischenko, gave a welcoming address to participants. He noted the rapid development of the FSU fertilizer market, where Argus continues to expand its presence by holding new conferences and offering relevant reference prices for the market.

Guests were also welcomed by Belarusian Potash Company director-general Elena Kudryavets, the deputy chairman of Belneftekhim Concern, Igor Bobyr, and Argus vice-president for business development Mounir Halim.

The first session, which focused on the global and European fertilizer markets, was opened by Argus Potash editor Ewan Thomson. He provided an overview of the global potash market and key industry trends.

The second speaker was Belaruskali director-general Ivan Golovaty, who stressed that the company is utilising its capacity at a high rate, although turnarounds are taking place at certain production facilities. The chief executive also spoke about the company’s growth strategy and its plans to increase potash capacity to 15.9mn t/yr.

The director of the Gomel Chemical Plant, Dmitry Chernyakov, provided an account of the current situation and trends in the Belarusian fertilizer market, as well as the prospects for future development.

Conference participants showed a particular interest in the final session of the second conference day, which featured a detailed analysis of the market environment in Ukraine, central Asia, Lithuania and Latvia. The reports delivered during the session prompted a lively debate among delegates.

The participants continued discussing the day’s key issues in an informal atmosphere at the evening cocktail reception.

The third day of the conference opened with a session that addressed the transportation and logistics of fertilizers. One of the notable reports provided an overview of the Russian inland waterways as a component of fertilizer logistics, and was presented by Igor Bratsev, a country manager at Dreymoor Fertilizer Overseas.

The final session was dedicated to the new trends and IT support of the agricultural industry. The audience showed a keen interest in the presentation delivered by Uralchem marketing consultant and analyst Olga Napalkova. She spoke about the prospects for using water-soluble fertilizers, both in greenhouse farms and for outdoor growing.

Argus would like to extend its thanks to all the conference participants, and we look forward to seeing many of them at future fertilizer industry events.
