Romanian government to reduce stake in nuclear project

London, 26 July (Argus) — The Romanian government will reduce its stake in EnergoNuclear, a joint venture to build two new units at the 1,400MW Cernavoda nuclear plant.

The Romanian government holds a 51pc stake in the project, with Czech utility Cez, France's GDF Suez, Italy's Enel, Spain's Iberdrola, Germany's RWE and steel company Arcelor Mittal also holding stakes.

“The Romanian state will never have sufficient resources to finance 51pc of the project, therefore we plan to renegotiate holdings,” energy minster Adriean Videanu told a press conference. The negotiations are on schedule and may be completed by September. The joint venture could be joined by new investors, he said.

The two new 720MW units should be completed by 2018, he said.
