Johannesburg, 28 July (Argus) — UK-listed Tullow Oil today said it had found oil at its Ngiri-2 appraisal well in Uganda's block 1.

Reservoir quality is similar to the Kasamene field in block 2, where output of 3,500 b/d was achieved during testing in 2009.

The Ngiri-2 well is the first of a multi-well appraisal programme to further evaluate the extent and recovery potential of the Ngiri field.

“Further activities will take place in the fourth quarter with the drilling of down-dip appraisal wells Ngiri-3 and Ngiri-4 designed to establish oil water contacts and reservoir distribution,” Tullow said.

Its exploration and appraisal campaign in Uganda had discovered more than 950mn bl of crudes reserves based on a P-50 calculation, an indicator of probable reserves. Its estimate of the yet to find prospective resource remained unchanged at 1.5bn bl, Tullow said.

Tullow owns blocks 1, 2 and 3A in the Lake Albert region in Uganda. It is planning to farm out a third interest each to Chinese state-owned producer CNOOC and Total, aiming to develop the area to produce more than 200,000 b/d from 2014-15. Tullow yesterday said it had completed the $1.35bn acquisition of fellow UK-listed firm Heritage Oil's 50pc interest in blocks 1 and 3A.
