Helsinki-based shipowners Finnlines have signed a contract to fit scrubbers to the majority of their vessels to comply with tighter emissions regulations from next year without having to buy more expensive fuels.

Scrubbers clean vessels' emissions, allowing shipowners to continue burning high-sulphur fuel oil while meeting sulphur emission limits. The cap on sulphur emissions in emission control areas in Europe and north America will be lowered to 0.1pc from 1 January next year, forcing vessels without scrubbers to use more expensive marine gasoil or other alternative fuels.

Some of the scrubbers will be fitted by the end of this year, and the remainder in early 2015. The cost will be funded out of Finnlines' €50mn ($69mn) capital expenditure budget for this year.

jj/et

Send comments to feedback@argusmedia.com

Request more information about Argus' energy and commodity news, data and analysis services.

Copyright © 2014 Argus Media Ltd - www.argusmedia.com - All rights reserved.
