Ahmed Shah Firoz is a former Chief Economist at India’s Economic Research Unit at the Ministry of Steel and an expert in metals and energy. He studied Economics at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, attaining an MA, MPhil and PhD before moving on to study industrial development and growth, with a focus on the metal and natural resources industries. Over the past 20 years he has worked on projects involving steel, aluminium, coking and thermal coal, metallurgical coke, petroleum coke and iron ore, in an Indian and global context, including as an independent consultant for companies such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Posco, and with organizations such as the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations and the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries. He is a member of the Expert Group in the Indian government’s Mining 2035 project, and part of the Advisory and Governing Body of the Steel Users Federation of India. He advises the government on various policy and strategic matters related to the iron, steel, coal and related sectors, and is seen as the architect of India’s new steel policy.
