Pupuk Indonesia outlines CCS blue ammonia plans

  • Market: Fertilizers
  • 02/08/24

State-owned fertilizer producer Pupuk Indonesia plans to achieve low-carbon ammonia production using carbon capture and storage (CCS) by 2030-45, it said at the International and Indonesia CCS Forum in Jakarta on 1 August.

Pupuk Indonesia plans to develop seven blue ammonia projects across its various facilities in Aceh, east Kalimantan, south Sumatra and east Java. The company is currently the largest grey ammonia producer in Asia, produced from natural gas without any CCS, with a total production capacity of 7mn t/yr. It will convert its existing grey plants to blue ammonia facilities with the implementation of CCS, targeting a total of 4.3mn t/yr of blue ammonia production by 2045.

CCS is a technology capable of capturing carbon emissions from the air and storing them in a storage facility with carbon emissions directed and injected into old oil and gas wells. Pupuk Indonesia plans to use CCS at five potential sites comprising the Arun field, east Kalimantan, Sunda Asri basin, Gundih and Sukowati. The Pupuk group is expecting potential CCS use to gradually increase to 4.3mn t of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2045, as part of its efforts to decarbonise ammonia and fertilizer products, while expanding into new markets for blue ammonia.

Pupuk Indonesia's subsidiary Pupuk Iskandar Muda (PIM) is expected to carry out the first low-carbon ammonia project for the group, by building a new blue ammonia plant with a total production capacity of 825,000 t/yr by 2030. Feasibility studies are currently under way at the Arun field as a potential site for CCS with gas supplies from Andaman Sea blocks. The next implementation would be adding around 396,000 t/yr of blue ammonia capacity to its PIM-2 unit by 2035, bringing PIM's blue ammonia total production to 1.2mn t/yr.

Pupuk Indonesia is also planning to add 594,000 t/yr of blue ammonia conversion to another subsidiary Pupuk Kalimantan Timur's Kaltim-2 unit by 2040. The producer has entered into an initial deal with Chevron New Energies International to assess CCS. Pupuk Sriwidjaya's Pusri-2B unit will also be replaced and added with a new blue ammonia plant, achieving 1.32mn t/yr of blue ammonia capacity by 2040-45.

This will be followed by further blue ammonia additions to Pupuk's Petrokimia Gresik plant and the remaining units at the east Kalimantan plant. Pupuk's Gresik plant is expected to have around 495,000 t/yr of blue ammonia capacity at the PG-III unit, with Kaltim to have a 660,000 t/yr new blue ammonia plant.

Pupuk Indonesia plans to work on the development of green ammonia using renewable feedstock beyond 2025 and to achieve ammonia co-firing in coal-fired power plants, with the help of government support, fiscal incentives, partnerships and acceleration of commercialisation operations at CCS sites. Indonesia has a huge potential to become a CCS hub by tapping its storage capacity in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, with total CCS capacity potentially reaching 4.85bn t of CO2, Pupuk Indonesia said.

India’s RCF gets offers for phosrock, NPS in tender

London, 22 January (Argus) — Indian fertilizer importer and producer RCF received offers from seven trading firms in its tender to buy phosphate rock and/or NPS 20-20-0+13S, which closed today. TLI Tradelink, Sun International, Agrifields, Aditya Birla, Indagro, Midgulf International and Hexagon Fertilizers Asia submitted offers in the tender. RCF will open the prices after evaluating the technical offers. The importer sought offers for two 35,000t cargoes of 29pc P2O5-minimum phosphate rock. The first cargo is to be shipped within 30 days from issuing the purchase order, with the second cargo in March, both to Hay Bunder, Mumbai on India's west coast. TLI Tradelink, Sun International and Midgulf International offered Egyptian rock for both cargoes. Agrifields and Aditya Birla offered Jordanian rock for both cargoes. Indagro offered Jordanian rock only for the second cargo. RCF also sought offers for two 35,000t cargoes of 20-20-0+13S in the tender. The first cargo is to be shipped on or before 20 March and the second is to be shipped on or before 20 April, both to any port on India's east coast. Midgulf International submitted offers for both NPS cargoes. Hexagon Fertilizers Asia offered only for the second NPS cargo. Fellow importer NFL bought 25,000-30,000t of 20-20-0+13S from Saudi Arabian producer Sabic at $396-397/t cfr earlier this week. Brazil Potash, Keytrade sign potash offtake deal

London, 16 January (Argus) — Brazilian fertilizer company Potassio do Brasil, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canada-based Brazil Potash, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Swiss trading firm Keytrade to supply up to 1mn t/yr of potash from its Potassio Autazes project in Amazonas. Potassio do Brasil already has an existing offtake agreement with Brazilian agricultural firm Amaggi for about 500,000 t/yr. The Potassio Autazes project has a planned capacity of 2.4mn t/yr and began construction in September. It is expected to start operating in 2029. Potash from this project will be destined for the domestic market. Brazil currently imports about 96pc of its potash needs. India's domestic urea sales remain strong in 1H January

Amsterdam, 16 January (Argus) — Indian urea sales likely hit 2.3mn-2.4mn t in the first half of this month, with domestic offtake remaining strong after record-high sales in December 2024. Sales to end-users were over 2.3mn t in the first half of January, latest provisional data show, indicating offtake for the month may exceed 4.5mn t. Urea sales were 3.54mn t in January 2024. Production is on track to reach around 2.5mn t this month, while urea inventories have slipped to around 5.5mn t as of 16 January, the data show. Stocks started the year at around 6.1mn t. International urea prices have surged in recent weeks, eclipsing levels in 2024, largely driven up by sustained import demand from India because of its strong domestic appetite. Sales likely hit a fresh record-high for an individual month at 5.2mn t in December . Market participants are keenly awaiting the results from Indian importer and supplier RCF's urea purchase tender, which closes on 23 January . Nutrient affordability remains weak into 2025

London, 13 January (Argus) — Global fertilizer affordability is still weak into 2025 as high fertilizer prices — mainly for urea — continue to weigh on farmer affordability. Nutrient affordability fell to 0.94 points in the first week of January, unable to recover from a declining trend that started in October 2024. An affordability index — comprised of a fertilizer and a crop index — above one indicates that fertilizers are more affordable, compared with the base year, which was set in 2004. An index below one indicates lower nutrient affordability. The fertilizer index — which includes global prices for urea, DAP and potash, adjusted by global usage — reached the highest value since October, driven by firmer urea prices, which weighs heavily on the fertilizer index owing to the relatively higher global usage when compared with DAP and potash fertilizers. Prices for urea climbed to levels last seen in late 2023, with activity ramping up across the globe. Prices appear well supported through the month with India entering the market over the weekend, seeking 1.5mn t of urea for loading by early March. A slight increase in the crop index owing to a rise in the first week of January for corn and soybeans was unable to offset higher fertilizer prices as the new year started. Crop prices for corn and soybeans, which represent 52pc of global consumption for key crops, also rose into early January following lower production estimates made by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the upcoming crop campaign in the US. The USDA revised earlier estimates made for the 2024-25 corn and soybeans crop by 1.8pc and 2pc, respectively. Submissions in under EABC’s DAP buy-tender: Update

Updates ETG's offer for lot 6 and details on Bio Green's offer for lot 6 London, 9 January (Argus) — Six trading firms submitted prices ranging from $600-639/t fob in response to Ethiopian Agricultural Businesses (EABC)'s counterbids under its 23 December tender to buy DAP. ETG, Samsung, Montage Oil, Promising International, Bio Green and Aditya Birla offered nine DAP cargoes from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Russia and Egypt. The cargoes will likely be 50,000-60,000t. EABC has not awarded any of these latest offers yet. Argus understands that Bio Green offered Kazakh DAP, but its offer has been cancelled. EABC had initially received offers for 13 DAP cargoes from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and China at prices ranging $639-705/t fob under the tender. It then countered , requesting revised offers at $639/t fob or below. The importer awarded lot 4 — laycan 9-15 February — to trading firm Midgulf International at $639/t fob, quoted as Jordanian product. But supplier backing for this cargo has yet to be confirmed.
