<article><p class="lead">Japanese battery producer GS Yuasa has started producing lithium-ion batteries at its new plant in Miskolc, Hungary, and supplying to European car manufacturers.</p><p>GS Yuasa Hungary is the firm's first overseas plant producing 12V lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, as part of efforts to tap growing demand in European countries. </p><p>The plant assembles lithium-ion batteries using lithium-ion cells supplied from GS Yuasa's Japanese operations.</p><p>GS Yuasa Hungary will initially have a maximum output capacity of 500,000 units/yr. The firm plans to significantly increase the new plant's lithium-ion battery output capacity. It is also considering manufacturing lithium-ion cells at the plant in the future.</p><p>GS Yuasa is looking to reinforce its lithium-ion battery production to tap demand growth in Japan and Europe. The firm established its Hungary operation in 2017, before starting construction of the plant. </p><p>Demand for lithium-ion cells is set to rise, with several battery producers <a href="https://direct.argusmedia.com/newsandanalysis/article/1861362">planning to expand globally</a>.</p></article>
