UK engineering firm Rolls-Royce has successfully tested 100pc sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or biojet, in a jet engine.

The ground tests, carried out in Germany, demonstrated that Rolls-Royce's Pearl engines can operate with 100pc SAF as a full drop-in option, the firm said. It also successfully tested 100pc SAF on a Trent 1000 engine at the end of 2020, in ground tests in the UK.

The SAF was produced by World Energy at its refinery in Paramount, California, sourced by Shell Aviation, and delivered by biodiesel producer SkyNRG. The unblended fuel "has the potential to reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by more than 75pc compared to conventional jet fuel, with the possibility of further reductions in future," Rolls-Royce said.

By Georgia Gratton
