Chinese new energy company Mingyang Smart Energy has produced what it says is the world's largest single-unit alkaline electrolyser.

The equipment has a hydrogen production capacity of 1,500-2,500 normal m³/h, Mingyang said, which would be equivalent to around 135-225kg/h, or approximately 3.2-5.4 t/d. The large size considerably reduces unit investment costs, the company said. Mingyang manufactured the electrolyser in Guangdong province and said it had achieved "a technological breakthrough in absorbing the volatility of renewable energy".

Mingyang's equipment has a much larger capacity than a 1,100 normal m³/h alkaline electrolyser that was previously billed as the "world's largest" by its manufacturer, Norwegian company HydrogenPro. HydrogenPro manufactured the electrolyser — which it says can produce 110kg/h, or 2.6 t/d — in China's Tianjin province and shipped it to its Heroya testing facility in Norway last month.

Chinese state-owned power generation company Huadian earlier this year unveiled a new electrolyser model with a production capacity of 1,200 normal m³/h.

According to the IEA, China already leads globally in electrolyser manufacturing capacity and the agency expects this to remain the case throughout this decade.
