US LNG exporter Venture Global has said it is set to become Germany's largest LNG supplier, after signing a 20-year agreement to supply Germany-based Wingas with 2.25mn t/yr.

The supply will come from the 20mn t/yr CP2 liquefaction project in Louisiana. Venture Global's agreement with Wingas — a Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) subsidiary — will make it Germany's largest LNG supplier, with 4.25mn t/yr of LNG agreements signed between the US producer and German firms so far.

German utility EnBW signed two deals in June 2022 to buy 0.75mn t/yr each from the 20mn t/yr Plaquemines and CP2 liquefaction facilities, starting from 2026 for 20 years. The utility signed another deal in October 2022 to take an additional 500,000 t/yr of LNG from the same facilities, with total volumes contracted standing at 2mn t/yr.

To date, 9.25mn t/yr out of CP2's 20mn t/yr nameplate capacity has been sold to a mix of customers including Chevron, Japan's Jera and Inpex, and Chinese gas distributor China Gas.

The CP2 project is due to have a peak capacity of 28mn t/yr, according to a filing with US energy regulator Ferc. But it has not yet reached a final investment decision (FID), although it already has approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export 28mn t/yr to countries that the US does not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with — an essential licence for US LNG exporters to hold, as most LNG-importing countries do not have a FTA with the US.

Germany's push to sign more LNG term contracts has been made particularly important, especially in light of the Russia-Ukraine war which broke out in February 2022, effectively severing all Russian pipeline deliveries to the country in its aftermath.

"Germany has acted decisively to diversify its energy portfolio and LNG will be a vital part of that mix as it seeks to strengthen its energy security while at the same time advancing environmental progress," Venture Global chief executive Mike Sabel said on 22 June.

By Rou Urn Lee
