He is regularly involved in projects to support policy implementation by state and federal agencies in Germany, covering topics such as the coal phase-out, power market design and EU emissions trading system (ETS) reform. Having upgraded half of the power station from coal to sustainably sourced biomass, in 2018, Drax Power Station generated 6pc of the UK’s electricity and 12pc of its renewable electricity. In December 2018, Drax expanded its portfolio to include flexible, renewable and low carbon generating assets from pumped storage, run-of-river hydro and gas. As a result, Drax can supply power to 8.3mn UK homes as well as an increased range of system services such as flexibility and inertia. Furthermore, Drax is trialling world leading carbon capture technology with bioenergy, which if successful could enable Drax to become carbon negative.

For the European Commission, he has recently worked on regulatory and market design for a decarbonised power and gas sector, while for European Federation of Energy Traders (Efet) he has worked on market and climate policy design for sector coupling, and a review of long-term supply, storage and transport contracts, efficiency analysis and stranded cost recovery in the gas sector. Before joining Frontier in 1999, Christoph worked at the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) in Cologne, where he was involved in consultancy and research on reform and restructuring in network industries. He has published numerous articles on regulatory and market design in the energy sector, and has a PhD in economics from Cologne University.

Paul is an expert in industrial decarbonisation and carbon pricing who has led analyses across Vivid’s practice areas, with a focus on energy transitions and the competitiveness impact of climate policies. He is a trusted adviser to private clients, including industry representative groups and energy companies, helping them understand the implications of environmental regulations. He has also worked with emerging market governments, the European Commission and the World Bank, drawing on his expertise in energy transitions and comparative policy analysis to develop long-term solutions to industrial abatement. He is a co-author of the World Bank’s ETS Handbook and technical paper, Carbon Leakage: Theory, Evidence and Policy Design. He has also written extensively on border carbon adjustments. Paul previously worked as a senior-level political and policy adviser.

A forester by profession, Simon has worked in Europe, South America and southeast Asia on public sector research and development projects, in commercial operations and with investors. He completed his first accreditation audit in 2000, and since then has worked in assurance and standards development covering forestry, palm oil, social accountability and biomass sustainability. He has developed the standards and processes of a number of schemes, and evaluated sustainability programmes for NGOs, companies and government agencies. Simon has also been instrumental in the development of the Sustainable Biomass Program, from conceptualisation of its standards and processes, through consultation, piloting, rollout and to full operational implementation.

Before this he worked at London-based brokerage Griffin Markets as head of cross commodity options, helping them build their market offering. Richard has almost 27 years of market experience from his time as a broker in London. Richard started as an interest rate options broker at Tullett and Tokyo until he transitioned into the commodity space in 2007. His focus there was initially carbon emissions. He was also instrumental in the growth of the options markets in these products. Richard ran teams in other commodity products including coal, iron ore, nuclear fuels, and insurance linked derivatives, in his role as a director of energy at Tullett Prebon. Richard also spent time running his own broking and consulting business, also offering compliance services to small bespoke financial businesses.
