IOC Pasadena restarts after month-long closure

  • Spanish Market: Fertilizers
  • 08/08/24

Major fertilizer producer Interoceanic Corp (IOC) resumed operations nearly a month after Hurricane Beryl rolled through Texas.

The plant restarted earlier this week, allowing the company to reenter the ammonium sulfate market. IOC has offered limited volumes at $335/st fot St Louis, according to market participants.

The Pasadena, Texas, facility had been off line since 8 July because of Hurricane Beryl, which damaged the facility and caused the extended outage. IOC issued a force majeure to its partners in the weeks following the storm.

Jordan’s APC eyes potash growth in Europe

Jordan’s APC eyes potash growth in Europe

London, 11 September (Argus) — Jordanian potash producer APC has established a new European subsidiary in Zug, Switzerland — APC Trading and Logistics Europe (APC Europe) — to help strengthen and expand its presence in the European market. The producer aims to increase sales volumes to Europe and enhance its customer service through the new entity, which will manage all stages of sales and logistics including storage, handling, re-shipping and distribution. It has rented storage facilities at Antwerp in Belgium and Terneuzen in the Netherlands to facilitate this. From these ports, the company can re-ship and distribute its products to customers across Europe, including those in France, Spain, the UK, Ireland, Benelux and eastern Europe using small vessels, river barges and trucks. Additionally, APC has been able to facilitate transshipment operations through these ports to reach even more customers. APC is already working with major buyers in north and northwest Europe, and has also developed a new European-standard potash grade to meet the specific customer needs. APC chief executive Dr Maen Nsour emphasised that its new logistical arrangements have meant that the producer can now benefit from shipping large volumes at lower freight costs compared with using smaller vessels, which were typically costlier and more difficult to source. In early September, APC Europe shipped its largest vessel of potash to Europe on the MV Draftvader , which was loaded with 54,800t of fine, standard and granular MOP for Belgium and the Netherlands. Vessel tracking data show that the vessel left Aqaba on 3 September. APC Europe plans to eventually expand its reach to southern Europe, in collaboration with partners such as the Arab Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries Company. The establishment of APC Europe shows the company's commitment to the continent. APC has been steadily growing its presence in Europe in recent years and has been diversifying its product portfolio to expand into new markets. APC chairman Eng. Shihadeh Abu Hdaib noted the importance of the European market as it would help to mitigate risks associated with the current volatile geopolitical climate, and balance the company's global sales. Increased disturbances to commercial shipping in the Red Sea since late 2023 have probably encouraged the company to pivot its focus more to the west. APC loads all of its potash from Aqaba in the northern part of the Red Sea, and freight rates have surged for vessels traversing the Red Sea as a result. Abu Hdaib also highlighted that its traditional markets have been facing strong price competition because of changes in global trade routes, which also led the company to strategically expand to new markets and regions. Nigeria's Dangote sells urea around mid-$330s/t fob

Amsterdam, 11 September (Argus) — Nigerian fertilizer supplier Dangote has sold 30,000t of granular urea for loading in the second half of September. The price of the cargo has yet to be confirmed with the parties involved, but indications range from $335/t up to $337-338/t fob. There were initial reports of a deal late on 10 September. This latest sale marks an increase of around $10/t on previous business in late August. Urea prices remain supported following the conclusion of NFL's tender in India, with availability tight out of most major origin markets through October. India's Fact issues another tender to buy 15-15-15

London, 11 September (Argus) — Indian fertilizer importer Fact has issued a fresh tender to buy 30,000t of 15-15-15. The tender, which closes on 23 September, specifies delivery to New Mangalore port over 1-15 December. The fresh request comes despite Fact having been offered two 25,000t cargoes of 15-15-15 by a trading firm in a tender that closed last week. But a deal has not emerged — at least as yet — from that tender. By David Maher Send comments and request more information at feedback@argusmedia.com Copyright © 2024. Argus Media group . Port of NOLA to close prior to TS Francine

Houston, 10 September (Argus) — The port of New Orleans (Nola) in Louisiana and terminal operators there are limiting operations today in preparation for a full closure Wednesday as tropical storm Francine passes. Terminal operators are expected to reopen on 12 September after damages are assessed. United Bulk Terminals (UBT) issued a force majeure this morning from the Davant terminal on concerns for employee safety. The company did not disclose a timeline for reopening. UBT specializes in coal and petcoke along with other commodities. Associated Terminals will suspend operations 11-12 September and will assess damages on 13 September. The National Weather Service forecasts Francine to make landfall tomorrow on the Louisiana coast as a hurricane. Commodities including petcoke, coal, agriculture and fertilizer are likely to be affected by the port closure.
