An Agricultural Economist, Nassirou Ba's career as Economic Affairs Officer at the technology, climate change and natural resources division of UN ECA started in 2009. The focus of his role is on agricultural transformation, food security, trade and climate change. Before joining UN ECA, he worked with USAID as the Programme Director in charge of southern Iraq. In this position, he worked on community-based development and transition initiatives and agricultural projects. He later joined International Relief and Development in Arlington, Virginia, where he was in charge of programmes for Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Nassirou Ba also spearheaded the agricultural voucher scheme in Afghanistan. He advocates for a green economy and climate-smart agriculture, and is currently collaborating with ECA partners on agricultural productivity issues in an eco-friendly environment.

Mike Nash is the Editor of Argus’ weekly phosphates report, the main contributor to the Argus Monthly Phosphates Outlook and is responsible for developing Argus’ editorial coverage of fertilizers, with special responsibility for the emerging African sector. He has 15 years’ experience covering the international phosphates and other fertilizer markets for a variety of UK-based price reporting agencies. He has also covered international energy and petrochemical markets and previously edited a number of manufacturing and engineering titles in the UK. Mike is an experienced speaker, presenting papers at various international industry events including AFA Cairo in 2011 and 2014 and GPCA in Dubai and Oman, TSI World Symposium, the FAI conference in Delhi as well as at many Argus events around the world and at numerous investor events and conferences. Mike is based in London. He is a graduate of Reading University with a BSc Hons degree in geography and economics and postgraduate studies in marketing.

Kalim has 30 years’ experience in corporate and commercial banking, project finance and financial analysis — including 20 with the IFC — with an emphasis on downstream oil and gas, manufacturing and agribusiness, and has experience in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, south Asia, the Middle East and north Africa, Canada and the US. He has an MBA and a BSc in mechanical engineering from Queen’s University, Canada.

Dr. John Wendt joined IFDC in 2011 and is the Deputy Director for Field Research, based in Nairobi, Kenya. He has more than 20 years of experience across the agricultural research-to-development continuum in diverse African environments (semi-arid Sahel, East African savannas, West African rainforests) involving multiple cereal, legume and root and tuber crops. His current area of focus is on balanced crop nutrition, which is addressing all crop nutrient deficiencies and soil acidity constrains through provision of balanced fertilizers and lime. His experience includes diverse management experience of multi-disciplinary teams of scientists, technical staff, grantees and stakeholders at project, program and research station levels. John has specific expertise in soil and plant analysis laboratory management, balanced crop nutrition, conservation agriculture practices, and integrated soil fertility management. Prior to his position at IFDC, John was Northern Area Projects Manager and head agronomist for ACDI/VOCA from 2008 to 2011 in Uganda. From 2001 to 2006, John was soil scientist and program and station administrator for the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), also in Uganda. John was a postdoctoral fellow for the Rockefeller Foundation in Malawi from 1989 to 1993. He holds a doctorate in agronomy from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. He also earned a master’s degree in agronomy and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA.
