Prior to joining the university in 2018, Charles was the executive director of the Energy and Environment Initiative at Rice University. He was also served as the Assistant Secretary of Energy in the US Department of Energy from 2011-13 and as Vice-President of Carbon Management at Battelle Energy Technology in Columbus, Ohio. Charles spent the first 32 years of his career with industrial gases company Praxair, serving in a variety of roles, including as the Global VP of Energy and Hydrogen. He currently serves on the US EPA Science Advisory Board and is a board member of the Energy & Environmental Research Center Foundation in North Dakota.
