Thomas is System Manager at the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) System. Today, more than 5,000 companies in over 100 countries use the ISCC system to demonstrate sustainability and credible greenhouse gas emissions reductions along their supply chains. After working both for the German government and the European Commission on climate and energy-related matters, Thomas’ work now primarily focuses on the sustainability certification for sustainable aviation fuels. He leads the team managing ISCC CORSIA, the ISCC certification standard recognised by ICAO to certify CORSIA eligible SAF. In addition, Thomas is part of the CAEP Working Group within ICAO as well as leads the SAF Working Group within Aireg, the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany. Read less

Freya started her career in carbon recycling as one of the first employees of LanzaTech, working directly with its gas fermentation process in the laboratory. She has first-hand experience of scaling and commercialising a new technology, from the R&D stage, through the challenges of fundraising and navigating the legislative environment to deploying new technologies globally. Today she leads the Government Relations and External Relations teams at LanzaTech, and plays a key part in advocacy groups around the world focused on circular economy, carbon capture and utilisation, the bioeconomy and low-carbon fuels. She interacts across multiple sectors supporting the commercialisation of new low-carbon technologies, including contributing to reports on scale-up and impact, and providing insights on common issues impacting the deployment of new technologies. Sarah is the Chief Executive of Nova Pangaea Technologies, a UK-based company developing biofuels, biopolymers and biochemicals from forestry and agricultural residues. After a stellar career in professional sport, Sarah has now gained over 17 years’ international executive board experience in the energy, natural resources and manufacturing sectors, much of it in the US before she returned ‘home’ in 2019 to the north of England to take over at Nova Pangaea. She was an Associate Partner at Hanson Family Holdings (formerly Hanson Plc) for over 12 years where she was involved in a large number of corporate advisory and management consultancy projects focusing on growth, strategy, turnaround, start-up commercialisation, business and operating model transformation, finance, investment, M&A, marketing and brand development. She previously held Chief Executive roles in the oil and gas, mining, healthcare and manufacturing sectors. Inmaculada has worked as a sustainability expert at SENASA since 2007, and has coordinated the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) EU Biofuels Flightpath and the ITAKA projects. She is a member of the working group dealing with the strategic research agenda for energy and environment for ACARE, and of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Fuels Task Group, and she co-leads the SAF task group of the European Civil Aviation Conference. She has worked on the design, implementation and operation of the EU emissions trading system for aviation in Spain. Inmaculada has been professor of Environmental Economics, Environmental Education, Climate Change Mitigation and Landscape Planning, and has worked on several research projects focused on the design of environmental market measures for sustainable development in Spain and Latin America. Rachel is KPMG’s lead expert on low-carbon fuels, advising a range of clients on strategies and investments at UK and global levels. Angel Alvarez Alberdi has been Secretary General of European waste-to-advanced biofuels association EWABA since its creation in 2013. EWABA is a Brussels-based trade association defending the interests of waste-based biofuel producers using feedstocks such as used cooking oil (UCO), tallow and other wastes to produce sustainable biofuels with greenhouse gas savings ranking among the highest available on the market. Angel has been working in EU government and institutional affairs in Brussels for the past decade, with a particular focus on energy matters and on EU legislative procedures. He started his career in Brussels with a stint at the European Commission’s Secretariat General, then worked for an international public affairs consultancy, the trade association European Biodiesel Board and a global law firm.
