President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he ordered his administration to look into curbing diesel exports from the US in response to record domestic fuel prices.

A growing number of Republicans in recent days have called for a short-term ban on diesel exports as a way to lower prices for the fuel, which have risen along with crude prices due to the war with Iran.

"I called for that too," Trump told reporters on Tuesday during a meeting with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy. "I've said, 'let's not send out the diesel'."

US treasury Scott Bessent, who was also at the Zelenskiy meeting, tried to explain how a ban would work.

"We're examining that, whether it's feasible in terms of the overall refining capacity and whether a full or a partial ban would work," Bessent said.
