Japan's largest power producer by capacity Jera is aiming to begin commercial operations at its new 650MW Anegasaki No.2 combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) unit on 1 April.

The Anegasaki No.2 CCGT unit in Chiba prefecture — east of Tokyo — has a 63pc thermal efficiency, which will contribute to cutting LNG consumption and CO2 emissions.

Jera started commercial runs at the 650MW No.1 CCGT unit at Anegasaki in February, and plans to commission another 650MW No.3 CCGT unit at the site in August.

The three new CCGT units are intended to replace the four ageing 600MW gas-fired units at Anegasaki that were demolished by Jera in December 2021.

Jera continues to retain the ageing 600MW No.5 and No.6 gas-fired units at Anegasaki as it aims to tackle possible power shortages during the peak summer and winter demand seasons.

Jera consumed 17.57mn t of LNG in April-December 2022, down by 3.5pc from 18.2mn t in the same period of 2021.
