<article><p class="lead">Integrated Canadian steelmaker Stelco's biggest union has rejected its new contract by a narrow margin.</p><p>The United Steelworkers (USW) Local 8782 union representing hourly workers at the Lake Erie Works portion of Stelco's mill voted 52pc against the new contract, according to results posted by the union on 28 July.</p><p>USW Local 8782 Pickling, which represents union members at a processing portion of the Stelco mill, was said to have approved their contract, according to the same union post.</p><p>Stelco's union member's continue to work under the terms of the prior contract, which expired on 30 June. </p><p>USW communications director Shannon Devine told <i>Argus</i> that a "no board report" request had been granted through the Ontario labor relations board. After that report is filed, Stelco can opt to lock the workers out or the union can go on strike. </p><p>Devine said there is no deadline for the report. </p><p>Another union at the mill, USW Local 1005, said in a 26 July post that it proposed a date of 16 August for the report, and noted that the date could change.</p><p>Stelco and fellow integrated Canadian steelmaker Algoma are both negotiating contracts with their union membership. Algoma's contract expired on 31 July. </p><p>In the US the USW is negotiating new contracts with integrated steelmakers Cleveland-Cliffs and US Steel over contracts that expire on 31 August. </p><p class="bylines">By Rye Druzin</p></article>
