Firefighters at Santos port, Latin America's busiest cargo port, are battling a blaze caused by an explosion this morning at a fuel storage tank owned by Brazil's Ultracargo, the company said.
The cause of the fire at a chemical storage facility is unknown and no injuries have been reported.
Ultracargo says it is Brazil's largest bulk liquids storage firm.
The company's Santos port facility has a total storage of 301,300 m³ (10.6mn ft³) including 175 tanks with individual capacity ranging from 100 m³ to 10,000 m³.
The facility handles oil products, ethanol and vegetable oils, among others.
"Smoke from the explosion could be seen from various parts of the city of Santos," oil workers union Sindepetro-LP said.
