Ireland to phase out coal by 2025
Ireland will completely phase out coal-fired power generation by 2025, minister for communications, climate action and environment Denis Naughten said.
Ireland's remaining coal-fired plant is state-owned utility ESB's 855MW Moneypoint facility.
The last coal plant in Northern Ireland, the 500MW Kilroot facility, will close in May after it failed to win an agreement in the all-island capacity market for delivery in May 2018-September 2019.
Other European countries which plan to phase out coal by 2025 include the UK, Italy and Finland. France has set a tentative deadline of 2022.
Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands plan to phase out coal by 2030.
