Global recycling firm European Metal Recycling (EMR) has leased a site for scrap processing at German's Duisburg inland waterway hub.

Duisburg port authority confirmed yesterday that EMR leased a plot of around 35,000m² in November.

Operations at this site are expected to begin in March 2019, according to market participants, with

EMR to install a shredder, shearer and other scrap preparation equipment. But these facilities might not be ready when the site officially opens in March, so the company would initially focus on building inventory through purchases of processed scrap from local sub-suppliers.

Duisburg lies at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Ruhr. The Ruhr valley is a major European industrial hub, hosting large steel producers and consumers, including ThyssenKrupp and Daimler.

ThyssenKrupp's Duisburg works has a capacity of around 10mn t/yr of crude steel. And Huttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM), in which ThyssenKrupp holds 50pc, operates a 3.8mn t/yr blast furnace in Duisburg.

TSR Recycling, a large European ferrous and non-ferrous recycling firm, also operates a terminal at the inland port.
