Nucor Sedalia set for November beginning

Nucor's Sedalia Missouri micro rebar mill is expected to open by November, adding 450,000t of annual capacity.

The $400mn mill, located approximately 90 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri, is currently under construction but will soon kick off activity and plans to eventually employ 250 workers, according to the State Department of Economic Development of Sedalia-Pettis county.

The facility will house an electric arc furnace and 180,000t/yr shredder to produce rebar, according to a Missouri Department of Natural Resources filing in September of 2018. Scrap will be received by truck and rail and shredded onsite for melting.

In February, the US Department of Transportation awarded Sedalia a $10mn grant to extend existing rail lines to serve the new mill.

Nucor selected Sedalia because of its shorter time and lower freight costs to ship rebar to Kansas City and the upper Midwest and Plains markets as current cargoes "travel long distances," the company said in its November 2017 announcement.

The steelmaker also highlighted ample scrap supply available in the immediate area for deciding on the region.

Nucor has already hired over half of the planned workforce and is training at other plants in Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.
