Sembcorp to convert two LNG carriers to FSRUs

Singapore shipbuilder Sembcorp Marine will convert two LNG carriers into floating storage and regasification units (FSRU), for delivery over the winter period.

Each FSRU is a separate project, the firm said.

Sembcorp will convert the 125,000m³ Dwiputra into an FSRU of the same size under an agreement with Karmol, a joint venture involving Japan's Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Turkey's Karpowership.

Karmol will provide an LNG-to-power project at Nacala port in Mozambique, which will utilise an FSRU already being converted from an LNG carrier. The two firms agreed earlier this year to collaborate on building floating LNG-fuelled power plants through the Karmol venture.

Under the second agreement, Sembcorp will convert the 127,700m³ LNG Flora — previously owned by NYK Lines — into an FSRU for infrastructure operator Gasfin Development. NYK and Gasfin are also collaborating on an FSRU barge called Project Lisa.

Sembcorp will also work on upgrading BW LNG's 173,400m³ BW Magna LNG FSRU, ahead of the vessel's installation at the UTE GNA 1 LNG-to-power project in Brazil, which is scheduled to be commissioned in March 2020.

All three projects will be completed at Sembcorp's Admiralty Yard in Singapore, and delivered between the end of 2019 and February 2020, the firm said.
