South Korean electric vehicle (EV) battery producer Samsung SDI has signed a deal to supply lithium-ion battery cells and modules to German manufacturer Akasol.

Deliveries under the agreement will run over 2020-27 and will total 13GWh, Akasol said. The value of the contract was undisclosed. Akasol plans to use Samsung SDI cells and modules to help fulfil two large battery orders from producers of commercial vehicles.

Samsung SDI is forming strategic partnerships in Europe to help capitalise on rising EV demand on the continent. The company agreed in July to an alliance with Volvo under which it will help the Swedish automaker develop batteries for electric commercial vehicles.

Akasol is already using some Samsung SDI battery cells and modules in its high-performance battery systems under an alliance that has been running for several years.
