US copper rod and wire producer SDI LaFarga will add a second furnace at its New Haven, Indiana, plant, boosting production by 250mn lbs/yr.

SDI La Farga, a joint venture between Indiana-based Steel Dynamics and Spain-based La Farga Group, will invest $16mn for the project, which will be completed by 2021.

The facility currently produces 180mn lbs/year of finished product using one furnace to melt copper scrap. The additional furnace will allow the company to produce copper uninterrupted around the clock.

The company is eligible to receive up to $255,000 in conditional tax credits from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, based on the project's estimated generation of local jobs.
