Finland to build new power substation

Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid has started building a new substation in southern Finland that will facilitate the connection of up to 1GW of new wind power capacity to the grid.

The new Karppio substation is located in the municipality of Teuva.

The majority of the construction work will be completed by the end of next year and the installation of the electrical equipment is expected to be complete by autumn 2022.

The total cost of the Karppio project is estimated at around €24mn.

Several new grid investment projects are planned in Finland over the next decade to help support the country's goal of climate neutrality by 2035.

The 303km Forest Line internal transmission power link connecting Petajavesi in central Finland and Muhos in north Ostrobothnia is under construction. It is scheduled to be complete in 2022 and will have an installed capacity of around 700MW.

Nuclear power output has made up 37pc of Finland's energy mix this year, while hydro, onshore wind and biomass have made up 24pc, 12pc and 10pc, respectively,
