Finnish biofuels producer Neste has supplied 300t of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or biojet, to Finnair at Helsinki airport to reduce carbon emissions related to Neste employees' business air travel.

Neste has arranged to supply a total of 500t of SAF in Europe and North America to the airlines most frequently used by its employees for business travel. This includes that provided to Finnair.

Neste said that replacing fossil jet fuel with 500t of SAF will cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 1,500t of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) when all emissions over the life-cycle of the fuels are taken into account and compared. The emission savings correspond to the total estimated emissions that resulted from Neste employees' business air-travel globally in 2020, it said.

Neste said it aims to make this process available for businesses, public institutions and other organizations with climate commitments.

Finnar said that the 300t of SAF that it will receive will reduce its GHG emissions by 900t of CO2e. It has a target to become carbon neutral by 2045, and to halve its net CO2 emissions by the end of 2025.

Neste expects the amount of SAF needed to cut emissions resulting from its employees' business air travel to increase post Covid-19.
