Norwegian marine engineering firm Teco 2030 has launched funnel emissions reduction systems that ships can use alongside conventional exhaust gas cleaning systems, or scrubbers.

The funnels are designed to capture sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, as well as reduce particulate matter and black carbon emissions. It builds on technology already used in scrubbers and can be used instead of or alongside an existing scrubber, Teco said.

The closed-loop funnel will be for vessels operating in areas where discharging scrubber wash water is banned. The hybrid funnel can be either open-loop or closed-loop depending on where the ship is operating. Closed-loop systems store the wash water on board so it can be emptied out elsewhere for further treatment.

Several jurisdictions across the world have banned the discharge of scrubber wash water in their waters. Turkey did so this month and Singapore, the world's biggest bunker port, also has a ban in place. In February, the EU parliament voted against a complete ban on scrubbers in EU waters.

Teco said in the future it wants to integrate CO2 capture technology into the funnels. Finnish scrubber manufacturer Wartsila said last month that scrubbers could eventually be able to capture CO2.
