The number of passengers using Australia's busiest airport of Sydney dipped in May from the 13-month high reached the previous month. Domestic flights made up most of the activity with international flights remaining more than 96pc below pre-Covid-19 levels.

Domestic passenger traffic last month was down by 39.2pc on the corresponding period in 2019 prior to the pandemic, said airport operator Sydney Airport. Domestic traffic was affected by the latest lockdown in neighbouring Victoria state from 27 May.

International and domestic passenger numbers were also affected by Covid-19 hotspots being declared in Sydney in early May. These resulted in brief restrictions on Australian interstate travel and a 72-hour pause in quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand.
