Geodis offers customers the use of biofuels

Global logistics company Geodis is offering its customers the use of sustainable fuels for air and sea transport.

Geodis will offer the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and sustainable marine fuel (SMF) and customers will be allowed to opt for as high a level of contribution as they wish, covering up to 100pc of the CO2 emitted by the transport of their shipment.

The sustainable fuels are derived from non-fossil sources like food and agricultural waste, primarily used cooking oil (UCO). Geodis says their use will result in CO2 emissions reduction of at least 80pc for air and 90pc for sea transport as well as a reduction in other pollutants.

Geodis told Argus that there are initial partnership agreements with SkyNRG for the supply of SAF and with Good Shipping for the supply of SMF but no details on volumes were specified.

"Biofuels are currently the most effective way to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of transport activities," Geodis executive Philippe de Carne said.

Geodis already uses sustainable fuels in the form of Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG for road transport. In June it signed an agreement with Italian transport vehicle manufacturer Iveco to purchase 200 CNG vehicles that will run on biogas, with delivery scheduled at the end of this year. The trucks will be used for urban delivery in France.
