A leak of an unidentified material has led integrated steelmaker US Steel to shut down a finishing plant in Indiana.

The steelmaker closed its Midwest finishing plant in Portage, Indiana, after the finishing line wastewater treatment plant suffered an upset condition.

The Midwest plant will remain down until the condition is stabilized. US Steel did not give a timeframe for a restart.

The plant, which operates as part of the steelmaking operations at US Steel's Gary Works steel mill, has pickling, cold rolling, tinning and galvanizing lines.

The same facility suffered a chemical spill in 2017 that led to the city of Chicago suing US Steel.
