Southwest Airlines cancelled hundreds more flights today after cancelling nearly 2,000 flights over the weekend, with the US carrier blaming disruptive weather and air traffic controller issues.
The airline cancelled more than 1,800 flights during the weekend and has scratched 360 so far today, with another 587 flights delayed as of 11:30am ET, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
Southwest placed the blame on stormy weather and air traffic control issues.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said no air traffic control shortages have been reported by an airline since 8 October. Some airlines experienced scheduling challenges because aircraft crews were out of place, and some flights were disrupted during the evening of 8 October because of stormy weather, the FAA said.
Southwest's 1,124 cancellations on 10 October accounted for 74pc of all US flight cancellations, while the cancellations so far today comprised 65pc of total US cancellations, according to FlightAware data. The majority of Southwest's cancellations on 10 October were at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which had 97 cancellations. Denver International Airport had 75 flights cancelled, and 65 flights were cancelled at Dallas Love Field.
