Brazilian state-run oil and gas company Petrobras reached a record level of LNG imports in 2021, at 23mn m³/d, including a single-day record of 40mn m³ on 1 October.

LNG represents 30pc of Petrobras' gas supply for its consumers. In 2021, Brazil faced a drought that limited hydropower generation, leading the country to rely heavily on its thermal power generation plants, many running on LNG, supplied almost exclusively by Petrobras.

The prior LNG import record was reached in 2014, when Petrobras imported 20mn m³/d. In 2020, Petrobras imported 7.5mn m³/d.

The LNG imports originated from the US, Trinidad and Tobago, and Qatar.
