Finnish refiner Neste has made a final investment decision to expand its Rotterdam refinery in the Netherlands, which will increase its global renewable products production capacity to 6.8mn t/yr by the end of 2026.

The firm aims to start operations of the new production unit in the first half of 2026. Neste's Rotterdam refinery currently produces products such as renewable feedstock for polymers and chemicals, renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. The expansion plans will increase its production capacity by 1.3mn t/yr from 1.4mn t/yr to 2.7mn t/yr. The individual product breakdown for its expansion is unclear but SAF output will be 1.2mn t/yr.

The expansion decision comes amid rising demand for renewable products. Japanese petrochemical producer Mitsui Chemicals purchased bio-naphtha from Neste in May last year to manufacture bio-phenol.

Neste currently produces 3.3mn t/yr of renewable products globally. Other plans include its continuing expansion in Singapore and its joint venture with US refiner Marathon Petroleum in Martinez, California. These projects will increase Neste's total production capacity to 5.5mn t/yr by 2023.
