Greece aims to install 15.5GW of renewable capacity by 2030, according to the country's revised energy and climate plan, which was presented today.

The proposed revised plan sees Greece adding 9.3GW of solar capacity over 2023-2030, to reach 14.1GW of solar installed capacity by 2030. This nearly doubles its target from the previous plan, presented in 2019. The country also targets 34.5GW of solar power installed capacity by 2050, 2.7GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 17.3GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050. Greece currently has no offshore wind capacity. It has 4.6GW of onshore wind capacity currently and is aiming to reach 7.1GW of onshore wind installed capacity by 2030, largely unchanged from the previous plan, and 10.5GW by 2050. The plan also envisages 800MW of hydropower capacity added by 2030, with 700MW more hydropower capacity installed by 2050.

Greece plans to add 2GW of gas-fired capacity by 2030, reaching 6.9GW, but decommission 1.8GW of it by 2050. The country also aims to have decommissioned all of its coal and lignite-fired power plants by 2030.

These additions aim to bring the share of renewables in the gross final energy consumption to 45pc by 2030, an upward revision from the 31pc share envisaged in the national energy and climate plan presented in 2019. The plan also estimates that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 55pc by the end of 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

The plan also focuses on integrating battery storage technologies and green hydrogen. It envisages Greece reaching 5.6GW of battery storage capacity by 2030, from no capacity currently and 3.1GW envisaged in the previous version of the strategy, and 2.5GW of pumped-storage capacity, from 700MW currently installed. Greece plans to produce 205,000 t/yr of green hydrogen and have 1.2GW of electrolysis capacity installed by 2030.

These targets will help Greece reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and achieve competitive energy prices for domestic consumers, the country's energy minister Kostas Skrekas said. The plan is currently open for public consultation.
