Japanese upstream firm Inpex and Malaysian Sarawak's state-owned Petros signed an agreement on 15 February to explore the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Sarawak.

Inpex and Petros aim to build economically feasible CCS solutions targeting large-scale emitters in Sarawak. The firms will jointly carry out a feasibility study to identify CCS technology, facilities and operational arrangements at the potential development. The project is aimed at capturing emissions from gas fields with high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), power plants and the manufacturing and petrochemical sectors.

Details regarding the volumes and timelines for the project have not yet been finalised, according to Inpex.

Inpex has also signed deals with other firms to explore CCS solutions in Asia-Pacific.

It announced on 6 December last year that it will carry out a joint study for a CCS project with Japanese state-controlled energy agency Jogmec in the offshore Bonaparte basin in northern Australia, after the Australian federal government issued a permit for the firms to study CCS in the region.

Inpex also partnered with Japanese engineering company JGC and Thai state-controlled upstream firm PTTEP in April 2022 to develop a CCS project in Thailand, which will capture CO2 from the country's industrial sectors.

Japan and Malaysia have looked to strengthen their partnership to achieve decarbonisation by 2050. Japan's trade and industry ministry and the state-owned Japan Bank for International Co-operation have separately signed agreements with Malaysian state-owned oil and gas firm Petronas to explore CCS and low carbon technology.
