Indian technology firm GreenH Electrolysis is planning to set up a 1 GW/yr proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser factory in the northern state of Haryana.

The company has bought a complex at the Reliance MET Industrial Park in Jhajjar district of Haryana for the facility's first phase. It has started setting up the site and aims to commence operations in October, with an initial capacity of 100 MW/yr.

Green H2 plans to expand the capacity to 500 MW/yr over the next two years. In a subsequent phase, the company will buy more land to expand to 1GW/yr, chief executive Dhiman Roy said.

The company is a joint venture formed last year between Spanish technology company H2B2 and Indian firm G R Promoter, a subsidiary of infrastructure developer G R Infraprojects. GreenH said last year that it will also develop green hydrogen production projects "based on off-taker agreements" in India and the Asia-Pacific.

H2B2 is manufacturing electrolysers in Spain and developing turnkey solutions for hydrogen production plants. It has signed several deals for electrolyser sales and recently announced plans to list on the US Nasdaq stock exchange.

The Indian government has been eager to encourage electrolyser manufacturing within the country as it hopes India will develop into a key hydrogen production hub. It recently launched a tender scheme to support construction of a cumulative 1.5 GW/yr of electrolyser manufacturing capacity for five years.
