Danish container shipping giant Maersk and French marine logistics company CMA-CGM have formed a partnership to drive decarbonisation in shipping, they said.

The partnership seeks to develop fuel and operations standards for bunkering with alternative fuels. The companies will develop net-zero solutions, including new technology and alternative fuels.

At present, the collaboration does not extend to supplying 'greener' bunkers or developing infrastructure for 'green' bunkering, Maersk told Argus. But it said the collaboration would go beyond research and development, assisting what the company views as much-needed regulations to ensure fuels standards and safety.

Argus requested comment from CMA-CGM about their ambitions for the agreement, but has not received an answer at time of publication.

Maersk has previously ordered dual-fuel methanol-powered vessels and CMA-CGM LNG-propelled vessels.

Collaboration is a key driver in decarbonising a divided maritime industry.
