Australia's Jemena fined over gas pipeline breaches

Australian gas and power distributor Jemena will pay fines totalling A$135,600 ($91,000) after alleged breaches of laws governing pipeline flow information, said the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

The firm's subsidiary Jemena Northern Gas Pipeline (NGP) allegedly failed to provide the Australian Energy Market Operator with up-to-date capacity outlooks between October 2020 and December 2022.

The 622km NGP is a 90 TJ/d (2.4mn m³/d) link between Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory and the mining town of Mount Isa in Queensland state.

The breaches undermined the Gas Bulletin Board's operations and market participants' trust in its data, said AER board member Justin Oliver. The payment of fines does not constitute an admission of liability by Jemena.

The company was hit with charges across four of its subsidiaries in June for alleged failures to comply with gas transport rules.

An additional A$36.6mn of federal money has been provided for the AER over four years from 2023-24 to increase energy market compliance and enforcement activity.
