Australia’s Strike reaches Walyering gas output target

Australian independent Strike Energy's Walyering gas project in Western Australia (WA) reached its nameplate capacity of 33 TJ/d (884,000 m³/d) last month, while executing another sales agreement for output from the field.

The field in WA's Perth basin began gas sales on 1 October 2023, with initial production of around 20 TJ/d, but reached its 33 TJ/d ambition on 24 December 2023, the firm said on 3 January.

Strike said downstream maintenance on the Parmelia gas pipeline had limited deliveries for its marketing arrangements, but upstream performance had met expectations, with all reservoirs now opened.

The Perth-headquartered company also announced a new gas sales agreement with Alinta Energy for 3.4PJ to be delivered into the Parmelia gas pipeline over two years from February.

Walyering, which is located approximately 150km north of Perth, has certified proved and probable reserves of 56PJ equivalent, with Strike estimating it would recoup the A$30mn ($20mn) gross construction cost of the field via gas and condensate sales within two quarters.

Strike on 14 December completed a takeover of fellow Australian independent Talon Energy, which is its 45pc joint venture partner in Walyering.

LNG exporting giant WA is facing a significant gas shortfall in the coming decade, with supply from committed and expected projects estimated to fall more than 10pc short of demand from 2031 the Australian Energy Market Operator has said.

Firms operating in the Perth basin are calling for exemptions to a ban on export of onshore gas, with the peak body for upstream operators saying state policy would discourage investment needed to increase gas output
