Swedish SAF demand at post-mandate record in November

Sweden's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) demand in November was the highest since records began, according to preliminary figures from government data provider Statistics Sweden.

SAF demand was 7,900m³, up from 1,800m³ in October and the highest since Sweden introduced a 0.8pc emissions reduction mandate for aviation in July 2021. This mandate was proposed to rise to 27pc by 2030, but will be frozen this year at 2023 levels in order to ease the transition to an EU-wide SAF mandate.

The European parliament formally adopted a regulation setting out a target for SAF use at airports which, once formally approved by EU ministers, will establish an initial target of 2pc SAF in the aviation fuel mix as of 2025.

Sweden's ethanol consumption was down by 4pc on the month, at 21,500m³, with the share of ethanol in the country's gasoline blend inching lower by 1 percentage point, to 9pc."

Revised figures from the data provider show gasoline deliveries of 229,400m³, up from the originally reported 229,100m³. Month-on-month gasoline changes in November rose by just over 2pc, to 234,300m³. Deliveries of E85 — gasoline with up to 85pc ethanol content — fell by around 6pc, making 1,600m³ of Sweden's road fuel mix. Of this 1,270m³ was ethanol, lower by 8pc.

The share of biofuels in the Swedish diesel pool increased to 27pc in November, up by 1 percentage point on the month. The amount of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) rose by nearly 2pc compared with October, to 98,600m³, while fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) moved lower to 21,250m³, down by 25pc and the lowest in 2023. Total diesel deliveries moved lower on the month to 449,550m³, down by 8pc.

Swedish jet-kerosine demand fell by 14pc in November, trending lower for a fourth consecutive month to 57,550m³. Demand for bionaphtha fell significantly, from 11,250m³ to 350m³.
