Indian metals producer Shyam Metalics will build a state-of-the-art wagon manufacturing facility in Kharagpur, West Bengal, with an annual production capacity of 4,800 wagons, the firm announced on 19 May.

The company plans to build the facility under its step-down subsidiary, Ramsarup Industries, and expects to begin operations by March 2026. The plant will be developed in two phases. The first phase will have a production capacity of 2,400 wagons/yr, or approximately 8 wagons/d, while the second phase will double output to 4,800 wagons/yr.

The firm aims to produce a variety of wagons at the plant, including flat, open, box, covered, tank and specialised wagons. The plant will adopt the "Uni-Flow" manufacturing layout according to international standards to ensure efficient production, said company director Sheetij Agarwal.

The move is a key part of Shyam Metalics' defined five-year capital expenditure plan and aligns closely with the government's "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiatives, highlighting Shyam Metalics' dedication to fostering self-reliance in critical infrastructure, the firm said. The facility reflects the company's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and nation-building, it added.
