Early season Canadian wheat exports up on year

Exports of Canadian non-durum wheat exceeded year-prior levels by the third week of the 2025-26 (August-July) season, latest Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) data show.

Wheat exports totalled 1.04mn t as of 24 August, some 30,000t above shipments at the same point in 2024-25 — an estimated record season for Canadian wheat exports, according to the country's agriculture ministry (AAFC).

This is the highest exported volume for this stage in the marketing year since 2020-2021, CGC data show, and marks a 72,000t increase from the five-year average.

Export pace is likely to pick up a little as the season progresses, especially given a slow start to spring wheat harvesting in major producing regions Alberta and Manitoba, provincial crop reports show. But the pace is unlikely to continue outpacing previous years, with a decline in Canadian production paired with firm global stocks expected to weigh on the country's export prospects. Canada will need to export an average of 409,500t per week for the remainder of the marketing year to meet AAFC's forecast 21.1mn t of non-durum wheat exports this season.
