Corrects that Dantata is a Dangote official
The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (Nupeng) placed its members "on red alert" today to resume suspended nationwide industrial action, following a dispute over loadings at the 650,000 b/d Dangote refinery.
Dangote official Alh Sayyu Aliu Dantata had ordered Nupeng truck drivers to remove "union stickers" from their trucks on 10 September and drive to the Dangote refinery to load product, according to Nupeng. Union officials subsequently prevented loadings as the trucks "violated union loading rules and regulations".
Citing the incident, Nupeng asked its members to be ready to resume strike action and called on other unions to support them.
The situation was "very tense", one market participant said.
Dangote was approached for comment.
Nupeng had ended its nationwide strike only on 10 September, following a settlement mediated by the Nigerian government.
