India intends to launch another round of renewable ammonia tenders in the medium term, once it completes the pending requirements from the first round, government officials have told Argus.

Fertiliser companies have already expressed interest in purchasing 350,000 t/yr of renewable ammonia, a government official said. The first round, for which auctions concluded late last month, had been for supply of 724,000 t/yr.

The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) will move ahead with the next tender only after it signs supply agreements from the first round and gathers data to evaluate the feasibility of a second phase, an official from the ministry said. This could take another 6-8 months, the official added.

While auctions for the first round have been completed, the formal signing of supply agreements is still pending, and the government aims to complete this process by the end of the year.

The government still has about 40bn rupees ($454mn) available under the national green hydrogen mission, an official from the MNRE said. The mission's total budget is Rs197.4bn.

The government is also exploring a green methanol tender and is evaluating market demand for this initiative, according to two officials.
