Hungarian oil firm Mol has carried out its first pilot production of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) partially using plastic waste, at its Tiszaujvaros site in Hungary.

The company has co-processed "circular feedstock" from post-consumer plastic waste with traditional inputs in a steam cracker at Tiszaujvaros, it said. It said it used the mass balance methodology to track the share of circular feedstock during the ISCC Plus-certified production process.

It did not disclose how much was involved, either inputs or output.

Mol obtained ISCC Plus certification for the steam cracking and polymerisation units of its Hungarian and Slovakian petrochemical facilities kin 2024. It said at the time that it aimed to expand its product portfolio with chemically recycled polymers.

Mol also started construction designs with technology licenser Lummus in 2024 for a pyrolysis chemical recycling plant at Tiszaujvaros, which it expects to have processing capacity of 40,000 t/yr of mixed plastic waste.
