Spanish energy firm Repsol has taken a final investment decision (FID) on a 100MW electrolyser at its industrial complex in Bilbao, northern Spain.

The plant will produce 15,000 t/yr of renewable hydrogen and is scheduled to start operating in 2029. Repsol will use the output at its 220,000 b/d Bilbao refinery and for industrial decarbonisation in the Basque country.

Repsol will invest €292mn ($345mn) in the project and will receive €160mn in support from the Spanish government. The initiative also received Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) status.

Repsol took FID last year on a 100MW electrolyser at its 220,000 b/d Cartagena refinery, in southeastern Spain. The company expects to take FID on an electrolysis plant at its 180,000 b/d Tarragona refinery during this year.

Repsol last year cancelled development of other renewable hydrogen plans in Spain, including in Puertollano and in Galicia.
