Kazakh vertically integrated steelmaker Qarmet plans to commission a new long products rolling complex at its Temirtau works by the end of 2026, according to the country's presidential press service, following a visit by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday.

The new 540,000 t/yr capacity mill will produce high-strength A600 and A1000 reinforcing bar, as well as angles, channels and other long steel products. The complex, which will include a reheating furnace with capacity of up to 100 t/hr, is being designed and built by Chinese engineering company CERI, the project's technological partner.

The project forms part of Qarmet's wider modernisation programme, which includes new coke batteries, a galvanising and polymer-coating line, and a casting and rolling complex. The company's total investment programme is valued at around $3.5bn.

Qarmet, based in Temirtau, traces its origins to the Karmet metallurgical complex, one of the largest integrated steelworks in the former Soviet Union. Following its incarnations as Ispat Karmet, Mittal Steel Temirtau and ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the assets were acquired by a Kazakhstan-led investor group in 2023 and renamed Qarmet.
